The Global Environmental Facilities (GEF) Small Grants Programme

With the help of GEF grants MSVS established "Centers of Learning” in about 200 secondary schools in Sindhdurg and Ratnagiri districts for promoting local response for biodiversity conservation. The goal and purpose of the project was to promote local response of the school children for conserving the natural resources of Ratnagiri and Sindhudurg districts through various techniques, such as:

  • Survey of flora and fauna of the regions under study,
  • Demonstration of the conservation of ecologically important (e.g. endangered species) species of plants through establishment of gardens of medicinal plants in and around the schools, and
  • Creating awareness through formal and non formal methods among various strata of the society about the importance of environmental protection

Schools for establishing the “Centres of Learning” were chosen on the following criteria:

  • The secondary schools identified for the project were recognized by the State Government
  • The number of children in each centre was about 50 from Std. VI to IX
  • Every school had to nominate one teacher for coordinating all the activities of the centre

Teachers thus identified were given an orientation towards:

  • Educating children about ecosystems and their components, and also the cause of its deterioration.
  • Imparting knowledge about the role of different factors affecting an eco-system, and interdependence of various components within the ecosystem
  • Organizing field visits and demonstration exercises for creating an inventory of natural resources
  • Training students to organize a nursery of important plants observed in the surrounding region as well as their plantation in nearby areas
  • Training for mobilizing youngsters in resource management, and
  • Training for involving students in environment preservation effort

Various activities involving children were initiated like:

  • Natural resource survey
  • Inventory of sacred groves (sacred groves are traditionally protected small patches of vegetation types and managed by the local communities)
  • Development of medicinal plants garden
  • Organization of school level competitions in drawing, elocution, essays and poster presentations
  • Awareness creation at various strata of the society
  • People’s participation in environmental education activities like World Environment day by organizing padyatras

Patchouli project:

In order to popularize planting of medicinal and other important herbs in the region to help farmers augment their agricultural incomes, MSVS took up a pilot project in patchouli plantation. The patchouli oil is used in perfumeries, modern scented industrial products like paper towels, air fresheners and laundry detergents. It could be also used as insect repellent.
