Employability skills programs

MSVS has now launched employability skills programs in Mumbai’s shanties to enable underprivileged women and men to enable them to become self-reliant and live life with dignity. Beginning January 2012, when its first batch of 100 trainees graduated at a scintillating convocation function held on May 10, MSVS has trained more than 500 people in various traits. This includes 18 rescued minor girls from St. Catherine’s Home in Andheri.

MSVS skill repertoire includes driving (four wheelers), beauty and hair care, henna body art, tailoring, fashion designing and embroidery, artificial jewelry, welding and fabrication, plumbing, and refrigeration and AC repair. MSVS and IFFCO Foundation have jointly trained 100 drivers in Mumbai and Konkan areas. It has trained more than 300 beauty and hair care professionals as part of Godrej’s Good and Green initiative. All the training programs are of short-term duration and open the gateway to many urban and rural youngsters from the weaker sections of the society to their most cherished dream of earning regular income.

MSVS holds demonstrations in the communities to enable its beneficiaries to practice their art, thereby instilling in them confidence. Beneficiaries especially women are encouraged to become self-employed. At Malvan, a coastal town on the west coast of Maharashtra state, MSVS launched a unique program in water sports to provide market linked vocational training to the underprivileged youth from the fishing community. MSVS joined hands with the National Institute of Water Sports (NIWS), Panjim Goa, to train 30 youngsters from the local fishing community in two types of water sports:

1. Power Boat Handling
2. Life saving Techniques

The first ever aquarium-based theme park will be set up in Sindhudurg district soon, with its own dolphin stadium, theme restaurants, water sports facilities, and underwater studio from within which people can watch sea creatures in their habitat. The project, which is expected to cost about Rs 400 crore, aims to develop the tourism potential of beautiful Kokan beaches, generate tourism revenue and employment in the region. The proposed marine park is expected to usher in a boom in tourism activities, with water sports playing a pivotal role. Anticipating this, MSVS has trained the local fisher folks in these water sports so that they would be gainfully employed once the need arises. By doing such courses MSVS is also creating awareness about other avenue available to these locals, which could generate income.

MSVS partnered with NIWS, as this is the only authority in India, which can issue licenses to water sports operators. Without these licenses no one is allowed to start the water sports activities either in sea or in backwaters.

MSVS has also signed MOUs with giants like IFFCO Foundation, SEPCOIII Electric Power Construction Company, Godrej Salon’ and SNDT University for conducting employability skill programs. Its other esteemed partners include Jamnalal Bajaj Foundation, Godrej and Boyce, Union Environment Ministry, Lupin Human Welfare and Research Foundation, Ford Foundation, USA.
