From Fisherman to Entrepreneur
Naresh Kalmetar's journey from the underprivileged fishing community of Sindhudurg to becoming a successful entrepreneur is a testament to the transformative power of skill development, determination, and community empowerment. Born into the underprivileged fishing community of Sindhudurg, Naresh Kalmetar faced numerous challenges from an early age. However, fueled by a burning desire to uplift himself and his family from poverty, Naresh seized every opportunity that came his way to acquire new skills and build a better life.
His turning point came when he and his wife embarked on a journey of skill development at the Jan Shikshan Sansthan Sindhudurg. Through rigorous training in spinning coir yarn and crafting products from it, Naresh and his wife not only mastered a valuable skill but also imbibed crucial entrepreneurial acumen.
Armed with their newfound expertise and a certificate from the training program, Naresh was able to secure a loan to establish his small unit. Specializing in the production of coir yarn, coir handicrafts, wall hangings, and seashell handicrafts, Naresh's business quickly gained traction, especially with a stall strategically located at the bustling Malvan Beach, a popular tourist destination.
During the peak tourist season, Naresh's entrepreneurial spirit shines brightest as he generates significant revenue, sometimes earning between Rs. 10,000 to 12,000 per day by selling his meticulously crafted products. His success attracted the attention and support of organizations like the Coir Board in Bangalore and the Khadi Gramodyog (KVIC), which facilitated the expansion of his business.
Naresh's commitment to community development is evident in his efforts to empower local women by providing employment opportunities in his enterprise. Today, he proudly employs about 100 women, offering them a means to gain financial independence and support their families.
Furthermore, Naresh's dedication to passing on his knowledge and skills is commendable. Through his training programs, he has mentored over 400 students in the art of coir and seashell handicrafts, thereby creating a ripple effect of empowerment and opportunity within his community.
